This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the use of picture story books on reading comprehension of second-grade students of MIS Multahada. The study used an experimental design with a pretest-posttest design. The study population was all second-grade students (N = 40) selected by total sampling and divided into two groups (experimental = 20, control = 20). The main instruments were reading comprehension tests (pretest and posttest) and observation sheets for learning activities. Analysis techniques included calculating the average, N-Gain, and independent-samples t-test to test the significance of differences between groups. The results showed that the average pretest score of the experimental group was 69.55 and the control group was 60.10, after treatment the average posttest score of the experimental group increased to 94.45 while the control group was 64.90. The N-Gain of the experimental group = 0.81 (high category), while the control group = 0.12 (low category). In addition, the t-test showed a significant difference (p < 0.05), with a very large effect size, which indicates that the use of picture storybooks has a positive and effective effect on improving students' reading comprehension. The implication of this study is the recommendation to use picture storybooks as a medium for learning to read in lower grades.
