This study aims to identify the pedagogical competence of Islamic Education (PAI) teachers, the condition of students’ character, and how teachers implement their pedagogical competence in shaping students’ character. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques consisting of observation, interviews, and documentation, involving the principal, the vice principal for curriculum affairs, PAI teachers, and students of grades XI and XII. The results show that the pedagogical competence of PAI teachers falls into the good and professional category, as indicated by their ability to understand students’ characteristics, design systematic lesson plans, select various teaching methods, conduct interactive learning, and implement authentic assessments covering cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. Students’ character generally develops positively in aspects such as religiosity, discipline, politeness, and responsibility, although a small number of students still require further guidance. The implementation of teachers’ pedagogical competence proves effective through character-based lesson planning, learning processes emphasizing role modeling, habituation, reinforcement, and educational communication, as well as comprehensive evaluation of students’ behavior. This indicates that the pedagogical competence of PAI teachers contributes significantly to character formation, thus requiring continuous teacher development, sustained guidance, and supportive school environments to maximize character education outcomes.
